Beneficial essential oils for children

Back in 1994, I remember when a friend of mine received her first Essential Oil and a terracotta oil burner as a present. I was intrigued and loved smelling the oil waft from the diffuser. It was so magical! From that moment on I was hooked on not only the magic of the experience but the amazing properties of these glorious oils. Back then they were not as accessible, affordable and definitely not as widely used.   Fast forward to present day and I have used Essential Oils for years! I always have the diffuser on at home and also drop a few drops of Smart and Sassy by Doterra into my water to not only encourage drinking but to help curb sugar cravings.  Other people use them purely for their amazing fragrances and to help create or change moods, while other people are also using them topically for cosmetic or healing purposes.  Below I have put together a couple of my favourite Essential Oils For Children, when they are around the home.

Lavender Essential OilEssential Oils for Children

Antiviral, Antibacterial, Calming, Soothes Burns, Boosts Immunity

Lavender is one of those fragrances that people either delight in or cannot bear a whiff of the fragrance. There is no in-between, however, regardless of our scent preference this oil is undoubtedly healing on an emotional, mental and physical level.

For sunburn place 1-2 drops maximum into a spray bottle with water – it will help take the sting away.
Furthermore it can be diluted with fractionated coconut oil and applied to skin to heal cuts, scrapes and grazes to assist the healing process.

To promote a calm and balanced mood with your children dilute 1-2 drops either an oil burner or diffuser. Lavender is also good for the restless sleepers in the home.  To uplift the mood try a few drops of Orange! Sensational!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Anti-inflammatory, Antifungal, Antiparasitic, Pain Relief

Peppermint is a wonder oil because it can be used for many different ailments.  It is also a refreshing oil and great for waking you up first thing in the morning!

For  mild upset stomachs drop 1-2 drops maximum and massage with fractionated coconut oil onto the soles of feet and abdomen.

For colds, fevers and sinus congestion burn in a diffuser.

NOTE: For children under the age of  seven years,  some research states to use Tea Tree oil instead of peppermint.

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Anti-inflammatory, Sedative, Colic, Ear Infections, use to help calm people down.

This essential oil can be used with great effect on children (and adults!) when they feel irritable, impatient, teething or colicky.

It has been known to help to relieve allergies, hay fever and asthma.

For the skin it can be used to calm acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry and itchy skin and other allergic conditions in general.

For babies it can be used in a much diluted form to sooth an irritated and teething baby.

It can help with mild diarrhoea and gastric spasms.

Before Using Essential Oils:

  • Make sure you only use organic and pure essential oils as these are of a higher grade and quality. There are many brands to choose from.
  • Always follow instructions on bottles before using topically or through a diffuser. If you have any questions always check with the supplier.
  • Keep your essential oils in a safe place – not only will it keep them out of the reach of small hands, but a cool dark place will also help to reduce oxidation of the oils.
