Toxic-Free Clay Crafts

Toxic-free clay is super easy and fun to make at home in your kitchen.  It is a perfect craft to settle into during the winter months to inspire creativity as well as keeping the kids occupied!

What you need…Toxic-Free Clay

  • 4 cups flour (any flour will do!).
  • 1 cup salt.
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil.
  • 1.5 cup water.
  • food coloring (optional) you can use standard bottle or get creative and use beetroot juice!
  • water based acrylic paints (optional).
  • toothpicks and/or other objects for poking/writing/stamping etc. (optional).

What to do…

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 250 degrees for approx. 30 minutes.
  2. Mix together the flour and salt. Add the oil, and then slowly add the water until you get the consistency of clay that you want (don’t make them too thick otherwise they won’t bake properly).
  3. If you feel creative and want the clay colored add the food coloring that you have selected. We love blue or red!
  4. Shape the clay into the shape that you want. We recommend a small dish or plaque to hand on the wall.
  5. Write message on clay or draw design using toothpick or small wire.
  6. Bake creations in the oven for 30 minutes and then check on them to see how they are baking. Turn them over, pop them back in for an additional 30 minutes. They may be ready after 60mins total or if still a little “raw” you can pop your creations back in the oven for a further 30mins. Remember to keep a good eye on them as we don’t want cracks in our beauties!
  7. Once baked, place on cooling rack to cool down.
  8. Paint with acrylic paints if you want to jazz it up some more.
